To Government Officials and Healthcare Representatives, From the Events Industry

Now is the time to problem-solve. We find ourselves a little ahead of Italy's issues with the COVID-19 pandemic, and I believe that it is our duty as entrepreneurs to create solutions before this already unfortunate crisis gets any further out of control.

On behalf of the events industry, we urge you to work with our fellow event production companies to help get the United States through this crisis. We feel that now is the time to come together and help humanity combat this crisis. We also feel, in order to achieve this, we need to think outside of the box.

With the increasing need of hospital space, what better industry to help create large "event spaces", to help increase the amount of hospital "venues" needed to combat the rising medical needs associated with this crisis. Event production teams can turn almost any location into an event, (in this case, a hospital space) within a matter of days. Think anything from event grounds, parking lots, parks, and even warehouses with every service imaginable. These services along with design and architecture include everything from, tenting, sub-flooring, carpeting, power, Internet, ventilation, heating and air conditioning, sound and lighting, to vendor management such as on site catering, food trucks & portable bathrooms.

Think of a music festival or a pop up such as Coachella, except this time for people who need hospital care and support where the doctors and nurses are the real Rockstar's.

As we speak, Italy’s hospitals are being overrun by critically ill coronavirus patients, where health experts are having to choose between who gets life saving breathing machines and who does not. Experts are warning what we see in Italy is a scenario that could soon repeat in the United States.

Marty Makary, a Johns Hopkins University surgeon and health policy expert said “The best two indicators of what things will be like in the U.S. are the number of COVID-related deaths in Italy and the number of ICU beds.”

"In America, we have 331 million people. The [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] is estimating that about 40 to 70 percent of them will get infected," Porter said. She then explained how things would play out if 45 percent, or roughly 150 million people, in the U.S. became infected. Since the CDC estimates that nearly 80 percent of those who become infected with COVID-19 will be able recover without assistance from medical professional, and that 5 to 10 percent of those infected will need ventilators, Porter estimated that 7.5 million people, the low end of the CDC estimate, would need ventilators.
"So let's say we have 150,000 vents available in the country. That means [2 percent] of people could get a ventilator if they need one. 1 in 50 people who need a ventilator can get one. That means that 49 people out of 50 are going to die. That is scary."

"So what that also means is doctors have to choose who that 1 in 50 is. Can you imagine if you have to say, 'Oh, I'm sorry, you have had cancer before, so therefore...you don't have a perfectly clean bill of health, so you're not worth saving.' Can you imagine saying, 'Oh, I'm sorry, you're 80, and I've got a 30-year-old who needs a ventilator.'" These are devastating statistics.
